The Committee of the German Club
I arrived in Australia 1973 in Sydney. I am married and have two boys. In Germany I was working for the Hamburger Sparkasse (Bank).
When I came to Australia, I was too old to be an apprentice but too young to retire. I worked as Administration Manager, internal Auditor, Accountant and Finance Manager. One of my appointments was as CEO of a company with a turnover between 10 and 20 Million and staff levels of 75 – 200 people, including sub branches.
Between appointments and after my Semi Retirement in 1999, I managed my own business.
I joined the German Club in 1985 and was active in the Committees from time to time, including holding the Office of Treasurer.
In the last two years I assisted the Committee in a variety of areas and was appointed as a Committee Member again during August this year.
Having accepted the position of President of the German Club it is my vision to preserve the legacy of the Founders of the German Club, whilst at the same time leading the German Club to flourish in a modern, competitive environment.
Günter is a longstanding member of the Club and Committee member for over 2 decades.
Coming to Geelong, Victoria, Günter worked for the Railways in a variety of jobs from Maintenance to Stoker on the Locomotives. His passion saw him early joining Soccer Clubs and playing Skat. During the 1960’s he went to Western Australia and four years later crossed the country to settle in Brisbane. Quickly he became member of the German Club and took on the Vice Presidency of the Club during 1973 / 74. Günter moved to the Gold Coast in 1975 and joined the newly established German Club here on the Coast and was elected Vice President in 1977. Having held this Office for some considerable time, Günter left the Coast in 2012 to travel around Australia. Two years later he returned and was again nominated to the Vice President’s Office.
His hobbies include Camping, Fishing and Skat. In the Club he signs responsible for the Beverage selection and range served over the Bar.
I was born 1955 in Germany and went to University in Berlin, where I met Joe, who became later my husband. During 1985 we migrated with two small Kids to Australia. We started a business and I worked in it until 2011, when we sold the venture.
As frequent visitors to the German Club, we joined and sometime later the President invited me to stand for Treasurer on the Committee. As I had “retired” from the business, I accepted and the rest is history.
I like the Club life and enjoy working with people that are also devoted to our Club.
I see it the Club continuing for a long time for the benefit of its members and guests!
Born in England, came here in 1958 when I was 6 – start the count now!!! That makes me a senior member of the community!
Worked in Secretarial /Public relations prior to having a family then joined the real estate industry in 1993; I bought the business 5 years later then decided to sell in 2007. Real Estate was initially exciting and challenging and owning the business was another worthwhile step on the ladder of my life’s discovery. I have learned that you never stop learning and there are always surprises around the corner!!
I have 2 children and 2 grandchildren – my daughter and 2 boys live with me, together with my Rag Doll cat called Pus – what else?? We live in Robina and my son lives in Melbourne.
I visited the German club a year ago as a guest – I was introduced to Wolfgang and joined the Club. As I have known Tina and Joe for quite some time and enjoy their company, I followed the invite to work on the committee.
The German Club has been a constant source of enjoyment for me. The people are all interesting – everyday there is something new on the horizon. I have found that my friends at the German Club are a great support to me – I’ve always enjoyed meeting people and having fun with them – I think that’s what makes life worthwhile really.
I have been working and volunteering in different areas of the German Club since 1998. Now I am volunteering at the front Desk which involves taking bookings and organising functions. I like this position as I am interacting with a lot of people.
I am a current member of the Committee of the Gold Coast German Club and have been a member for the last 20 years.
I was born in Melbourne and my first husband was German and we lived with his mother for some 5 years, giving me a great understanding of German culture and ideals. I moved to the Gold Coast with my second husband, who was also German, so it was like a follow on effect.
I have six children and nine grandchildren who live in various parts of the world which I love and visit regularly.
I really enjoy being on this Committee and working with the other Committee members who are very professional in their day to day running of the Club for its members.
I came to Australia in 1982, working as a Chef for several Hotels, Resorts and Restaurants. During the same year I moved from Sydney to the Gold Coast. After joining the Club this year, I overtook the Media portfolio. Changes to the website and social Media have been evident and positive, improving the exposure of the Club to Members and Public alike. My passions are cooking and Motorbikes and I look forward in supporting the Committee in its work.
Originally from Graz, Austria, Herbert came 1956 to Australia. He settled in Morwell, Victoria and primarily oversaw projects, like building powerplants all around Australia and some overseas.
He joined the local German Club and served some four Years as Vice President during the 1960’s. Married with 2 children, Herbert came to the Gold Coast in 2012 and joined the German Club here as an active Skat Player, which is his great Hobby. He has successful taken out the Australian Championship in 2012 and 2016.
Herbert joined the Committee in 2013 and is happy that the Club is in a sound financial situation, based on the foresight of previous Committees.
As President he is frequently found behind the scene, laying hands on whatever needs doing and his hands on, balanced leadership is very much appreciated by the Committee and the Membership.
Being a professional Chef for over 40 years, Günther has worked all over the globe, from Canada to Hong Kong. I worked in the Middle East as well as some years on Cruise Ships. He was Executive Chef at Conrad Jupiters Casino here on the Coast for a decade and just recently returned from lecturing at the Hong Kong Hotel School. His passion is food and family.
Changes to menu’s at the Club has been positive and feedback has been great. Good German and European dishes are the hallmark of the menu selection and are prepared with tradition and care, always looking to satisfy our Guests.
